FORMATION & BACKGROUND
PA CleanWays of Greene County, an affiliate of PA CleanWays, was formed in 2001 with the support from the Greene County Commissioner's Office. The independent 501(c)3 affiliate of PA CleanWays focuses on cleanups of illegal dumps and educating the public on the detriments of illegal dumping and littering. Since our inception through the end of 2009, PA CleanWays of Greene County has held 54 cleanups removing and properly disposing of 678 tons of trash as well as recycling over 12,000 tires! Through our eight most recent special collection events, we have collected and properly disposed of over 5,900 tires, 4.5 tons of scrap metal, and 2.4 tons of electronics!
PA CleanWays of Greene County has an extensive network of volunteers and works with many local conservation groups. Since 2005, our volunteers have donated over 1,750 hours to make Greene County a better place to live and visit!
Unfortunately, illegal dumping continues to be a problem in the county. The Greene County Illegal Dump Survey was completed in 2007 by PA CleanWays to identify illegal dumpsites within the county. The survey located 49 illegal dumpsites totaling 449.75 tons of trash! We are in the process of cleaning up these dumpsites and could use your help. An example is the site on North Hill Road in Morris Township. After two cleanups, 28 tons of trash was removed and properly disposed.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
PA CleanWays has a variety of opportunities through which individuals, corporations, schools, and other groups and organizations can help to support our mission.
If you would like to volunteer for PA CleanWays, please contact us by submitting an online Volunteer Interest Response Form. Following is a sampling of volunteer activities available (note that some opportunities require training):
Litter and Dump Cleanups Make a difference in ways you can see in your own community. PA CleanWays of Greene County can help you get started on reducing dumping and littering in your community. Our cleanup program is known for its emphasis on safety, effectiveness, and community partnerships.
Public Education/Outreach Visit a local community group to educate them on implementing cleanups focusing on remediation, enforcement and prevention. Training is required. Enjoy meeting new people? Staff a PA CleanWays' booth at local conferences, fairs and events in your area and educate the public on our mission.
Site Monitors Site Monitors watch areas that have been cleaned by volunteers to ensure subsequent dumping does not occur. The frequency with which a site will need to be monitored depends on the frequency of the dumping or littering. As a monitor, you will watch over the site and maintain it by removing any small amounts of trash as they occur or by scheduling maintenance cleanups. Additionally, monitors report newly dumped trash to PA CleanWays and contact the appropriate enforcement agency if identifying evidence is found. Some training is required for this opportunity and will be provided by PA CleanWays.

EDUCATION & LITTER-FREE SCHOOL ZONE PROGRAM
The Litter Free School Zone program is designed to encourage students to keep their school grounds, campus, and neighborhood litter-free, and to raise public awareness regarding litter via a Litter Free School Zone sign to be displayed outside the school.
Students, clubs, classes, and even entire school districts can participate in the Litter Free School Zone program. Keeping their school litter-free is an easy and fun way for students to work together, learning valuable community leadership and responsibility skills while gaining a respect for the environment and the world around them. It is also an opportunity to develop a school-wide stewardship ethic and set a community example.

REPORT LITTER & DUMPING
PA CleanWays is not an enforcement agency, but we support the enforcement of all laws against dumping and littering. Click here to find a listing of enforcement agencies that have the authority to enforce Pennsylvania's laws against littering and illegal dumping. If you witness someone littering or you find an illegal dump, we encourage you to report it to the appropriate enforcement agency.
We also encourage you to report locations of illegal dumps to PA CleanWays. PA CleanWays is collecting information on illegal dumpsites throughout Pennsylvania.
Why Contact an Enforcement Agency? Agency employees are trained to investigate complaints, collect evidence, and take cases to court. They have the authority to conduct inspections, and are trained to identify and gather evidence to make a legal case. By contacting an agency, you may have the benefit of anonymity, since most agencies have confidentiality policies. In addition, you are protected from any countersuits of libel. However, your testimony could be important to a case, especially if you witness illegal dumping or littering.
THOMAS HILL GREENE COUNTY
The Thomas Hill dump site in Wayne Township, Greene County, was the first cleanup PA CleanWays of Greene County, then a Chapter but now an Affiliate, attempted. They started in June of 2001, but due to heavy rains that year they could only work for two days. When fall arrived, they were able to work for a day removing tires from the site but once again heavy rains prevented them from doing any further work that season.
The following spring brought good weather and the site was finished in April of 2002. Over the span of four days, 46 volunteers removed 40.5 tons of trash and scrap metal and 555 tires!
KEEP PA BEAUTIFUL
In early 2010, PA CleanWays and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful joined forces to promote illegal dump cleanups, anti-litter education and beautification projects to make our work with local partners and volunteers more effective. Through the merger of our two organizations, we will be a stronger and a more sustainable organization! Click here for more information on keeping Pennsylvania Beautiful.
