WHAT IS AGRITOURISM:
Most broadly defined, agritourism involves any agriculturally-based operation or activity that brings tourists/visitors to a farm or agricultural entity (store, events, activities, produce, farm stays, etc.).

Agritourists can choose from a wide range of activities that might include picking fruits and vegetables, riding horses, tasting honey, learning about wine and cheesemaking, or shopping in farm gift shops and farm stands for locally grown produce or hand-crafted gifts.

It also includes the tradition, fun and excitement of fairs and festivals throughoout our county, as well as the peaceful getaways of Greene County's farm stays and bed & breakfasts. Whether visiting an Alpaca Farm, taking a trail walk or ride or enjoying a stay at a working far,, you will enjoy an unforgettable experience at one of Greene County's agritourism destinations.


AGRITOURISM WEEK PROCLAMATION:
At their July 14, 2011 public meeting, Greene County Commissioners proclaimed the week of Aug. 7-13, 2011, Agritourism Week in Greene County at their July 14 regular meeting. The proclamation recognizes agriculture as a leading industry in Greene County, with more than 1,000 farms contained on more than 150,000 acres of land, according to the 2007 U.S. Department of Agriculture Census of Agriculture.

Greene County Tourism is producing a full-color guide and interactive Web page listing businesses that promote agricultural tourism in the county. The guide is scheduled to be published the week of the Greene County Fair. The proclamation encourages county farms and businesses to collaborate with Tourism in promoting agritourism opportunities.

AGRITOURISM — DESTINATIONS:
Agritourism destinations are ideal for family travel with events and attractions that appeal to all ages from visiting one of our local wineries or choosing the perfect Christmas tree. With a large variety of agritourism destinations to choose from in Greene County, families are sure to enjoy quality time together and bring home treasured memories.

While traveling through Greene County, make sure to enjoy fare at local restaurants made with homegrown vegetables or pick up some to take home and prepare a dinner of fresh ingredients grown by farmers from Greene County. Summertime brings our local grown produce and baked goods with our Farmers Market.


AGRITOURISM — EVENTS:
  • Greensboro Farmer's Market — held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:00 noon. from mid-May to late September/mid-October. It's a Farmers' Fair and Market to celebrate agriculture and to support and promote the buy local initiative; and located at the Greensboro Gazebo. Many local farm, food, and local grown products can be found each week. Everyone is welcome!   • Waynesburg Farmer's Market — held on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. from mid-May to mid-October. Open air market where locally grown produce, seasonal flowers, baked goods, and various other mecherandise by Greene Countians is available for purchase. The market is located in downtown Waynesburg next to the courthouse.

  • Waynesburg Sheep and Fiber Fest — held at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Waynesburg, PA. From sheep shearing to blanket weaving, this festival highlights how wool and other fibers affect Greene County. Artisans, sheep herding demonstrations and plenty of good food and family entertainment are available. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., both days.   • Covered Bridge Festival — held at the Carmichaels Covered Bridge (Rt 88, Old Town Carmichaels) in Carmichaels, PA and at the White Covered Bridge (Roberts Run Road) in Garard's Fort, PA. Fun for all ages, check out these picturesque covered bridges at both these locations. Crafters, Civil War re-enactments, music, and home cooking are just some of the attractions at these two festivals.   • Jacktown Fairthe longest contiguous running agricultural fair in the nation! Located in Wind Ridge, PA . . . locals say that, "You can't die happy until you have been to the Jacktown Fair". Farmers and housewives, among others bring their prize samples of produce, handiwork and livestock, along with farming ideas and equipment to share with the neighbors and the general public.   • Greene County Agricultural Fair — held at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Waynesburg, PA. This week-long event offers local farmers, 4H members and others to show their livestock, crafts, baked goods, needlework, canned goods and homegrown produce in numerous competitions. There are plenty of other events that will appeal to most everyone, including a rodeo, tractor pulls, demolition derbies, live music, rides, food and much more!   • Greene County Museum Annual Harvest Festival — scheduled from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm both days at the Greene County Historical Museum on Rolling Meadows Road in Waynesburg, PA. Celebrate the harvest season with a host of activities. Area crafters and artisans will be conducting demonstrations and will have items available for purchase. Witness Civil War reenactors and living history demonstrations. Food and beverages will also be available.   • Rices Landing Pumpkin Festival — held at Pumpkin Run Park in Rices Landing, PA, on the first weekend in October. Crafters, food contests, interactive crafts, pumpkin carving, pumpkin pie eating contest, pumpkin painting and more.

  • Buckin' B' Cattle Company's Championship Bull Riding CompetitionsSTILL the toughest sport on dirt; held annually at the Greene County Fairgrounds in mid-spring, is the Buckin'B bull riding competitions, click here for flyer.   • Enlow Fork Wildflower Walk — Early Bird Walks begin at 7:45 a.m. with Ralph K. Bell Bird Club and other clubs. Guided Wildflower walks scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.; both walks will begin at the Enlow Fork of Wheeling Creek, on the Greene/Washington County border. This event is sponsored by the Wheeling Creek Watershed Conservancy, and offers a unique opportunity to view an impressive array of plants and wildlife. With more than 60 species of birds, Enlow Fork is listed as PA Important Bird Area—14. Birding and botanical enthusiasts gather alongside professional environmentalists in the early morning hours to begin a day-long series of walks, discussions and identification of local plants, birds and insects.   • Annual Rain Day Festival — held in downtown Waynesburg, PA; a day-long festival that celebrates a 137-year-old bet that started from a local farmer commenting to a drug store owner that it seemed to rain every year on July 29; Rain Day went from friendly betting to a full-blown festival. Come and enjoy this unique annual festival, steeped in local lore! beginning with the Rain Day 5K run/ride/walk, followed by hot-dog eating contest, umbrella decorating contest, a pageant, live music, crafts and food vendors.   • Mason-Dixon Ramp Festival — Held annually at the Mason-Dixon Historical Park, 164 Creek Road in Mt. Morris, PA — held in early spring, event hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and admission is free. Ramps are between an onion and garlic and grow wild. Food (many cooked with wild ramps), antique engines, crafts, blacksmiths, and tractor & car parade on grounds. FMI, visit www.masondixonpark.net

  • Purple Martin Festival — held annually at the Mason-Dixon Park in Mt. Morris, PA. The purple martin is the largest of the North American swallows. For the past 100 years in eastern North America, it has nested almost exclusively in nest boxes. The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mason-Dixon Park features two purple martin houses and one gourd rack. The houses and gourd rack will be lowered to change the nesting materials in order to prevent parasites. Visitors to the festival will be able to see baby martins in various stages of development. The baby martins will be banded in order to be able to track their migration. Admission is free and there will be door prizes and food vendors. FMI, visit www.masondixonpark.net
