OVERVIEW:
The Community Service Program is a catalyst in which clients are referred from the judiciary to record and document the completion of the mandate to perform community service hours, with no monetary compensation. These clients are referred by the office to non-profit organizations, such as townships, fire departments and/or food banks. Community service workers also are used on special county projects, such as park and trail maintenance, construction and fairground maintenance.
The program provides an alternative to conventional incarceration for non-violent offenders who would normally receive more severe punishment. Program benefits include:
Non-violent offenders are held accountable as they work to compensate society for their criminal activity.
Local jurisdictions have a sentencing mechanism that punishes the offender at a lesser cost than incarceration.
The courts are provided with a sentencing mechanism that redirects non-violent offenders from parole and probation caseloads to conserve those resources for increased supervision of offenders convicted of more serious offenses.
Offenders are taught responsibility and good work ethics.
Offenders develop respect for and pride in their communities.
When used as an alternative to incarceration, community service helps keep families together.
