Prior to December 2013, Greene County had two Jury Commissioner seats, which by law, had to be filled with one Democrat and one Republican. However in January 2014, the responsibilies of the Jury Commissioners were passed on to the Court of Common Pleas - Administrative Staff, when the office of jury commissioners became non-existant for the County of Greene, Pennsylvania.
The Jury Commissioners were responsible for filling the jury list at the beginning of each year with the names of approximately 1,500 citizens of Greene County.
Throughout the year, the county's president judge issued a court order requesting that a certain number of jurors be impaneled to hear the civil and criminal cases coming before the court. The jury commissioners then would select the appropriate number of jurors who were to report for the scheduled term.
The Court issues the Order for the number of jurors to be summoned, but it was the Jury Commissions who determined the manner in which the jurors will be summoned. No one has the power to excuse jurors except the Court in cases of inconvenience and under hardship.
Now those duties have shifted to the Court Administrative staff under the Office of the Court of Common Pleas. Greene County elected offices of both Jury Commissioners will be abolished at the end of 2013. Click here for Press Release.
