ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE FISH KILL UPDATE DECEMBER 3

News Release: November 30, 2009
Contact: Elizabeth Witte, Communications Director (724-852-5210)

WAYNESBURG, PA – The Greene County Conservation District and the Upper Monongahela River Association will host a public meeting Thursday, Dec. 3, for anyone interested in receiving an update on the investigation into the Dunkard Creek fish kill.

The meeting will start at 4 p.m. in the community room of the Mt. Morris Gospel Tabernacle Church in Mt. Morris and is expected to conclude at 8:30 p.m. In addition to Dunkard Creek updates, speakers will also address efforts to protect the Mon River Basin’s water resources and enable growth of the energy industry in the region.

"The Conservation District Board of Directors called for this public meeting and invited agencies involved with the fish kill investigation to update the public on Dunkard Creek,” said Robbie Matesic, executive director of economic development. “This is an opportunity to make this information public. It’s not an easy task; it’s complicated, and there are a lot of agencies involved. But we want to bring all of this together so that people understand all of the work that’s being done. Solving the energy problem and the water problem go hand in hand. We’re asking the resource agencies to explain their work in addressing both sides of that equation."

Scheduled speakers include representatives from the UMRA, Carnegie Mellon University, Penn State University, the Pennsylvania and West Virginia Departments of Environmental Protection, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the West Virginia Water Research Institute, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The meeting will first introduce all of the lead regulatory and enforcement agencies and their work in addressing recent water quality issues. Speakers will then provide updates on Dunkard Creek and the issues involved with the fish kill, which was first reported in September.
