WAYNESBURG, PA – With the opening of the new Pennsylvania National Guard Readiness Center planned for early next year, the soon-to-be-former home of Company B, 1-110th Infantry Battalion of Waynesburg will receive a proper goodbye from the Guard unit and the community.
The Capt. Robert C. Wiley Armory in Waynesburg will be the site of an open house from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in anticipation of Company B moving to the new readiness center in the next few months. Construction on the new readiness center, located in EverGreene Technology Park in Waynesburg, is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
As part of the festivities, a variety of memorabilia will be on display, including photos, trophies and booklets. Video footage of troops past and present being deployed and returning home will be played, and the Greene County Tourist Promotion Agency will hand out souvenir reproduction postcards featuring the 95-year-old armory.
Attendees can tour the armory and meet with historians to learn more about the history of the building and the Guard unit, and veteran John “Buzz” Walters of Rogersville will deliver short presentations about the armory’s history every 30 minutes. Family members of Capt. Robert C. Wiley, including his daughter, will also be on hand.
Refreshments will be provided by Aladdin Food Management and Waynesburg University.
The open house represents part of a week’s worth of Veterans Day activities in the county, to conclude Saturday, Nov. 14, with a special reunion of veterans who served in a National Guard unit housed in the Wiley Armory. The reunion will start at noon in the armory.
