WAYNESBURG, PA Greene County commissioners Thursday approved a contract with Altered Gas Performance Events for the 2010 Flashlight Drag Racing season.
The commissioners announced at their January meeting that the Flashlight Drags would return to the airport after a yearlong hiatus.
This is good news for the Greene County Department of Recreation, as the proceeds from races are part of its budget. The Flashlight Drags were held in Greene County in 2007 and 2008, bringing in an average of $1,000 per race for the Department of Recreation.
A ban last year, imposed by the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Aviation, put a stop to all non-aviation activities at municipal airports. This effectively stopped the drag races at Greene County Airport.
However, the ban was imposed to protect improvements made to airports through federal tax dollars. As the Greene County Airport did not receive any such funds, they were able to prove that they were exempt from such regulations and therefore allowed to resume the Flashlight Drags.
The 2010 season will begin May 16 with additional races June 20, July 11 and Oct. 30. Rain dates for the May, June and July races will be held one week later if necessary. There is no scheduled date in the event of rain for the Oct. 30 race. The airport will be closed to air traffic on race days.
Admission is $25 for those participating as drivers and $5 for spectators.
