News Release: April 27, 2010 Contact: Elizabeth Witte, Communications Director (724-852-5210)
WAYNESBURG, PA The Greene County Commissioners and the Office of Veterans Affairs will host an information session on “Federal, Pennsylvania State and County Veterans’ Benefits” from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, May 3, on the upper level of the 4-H Building at the Greene County Fairgrounds. The information session is free and open to Greene County veterans of all ages and their families.
The session will be presented by David Dunham and Timothy Owens, two veterans service officers from the Pittsburgh Veterans Affairs Regional Office. They will discuss the state and federal benefits available to veterans, including compensation, pension, widows’ benefits and the state veterans’ home system. Sarah Smith, Greene County veterans affairs director, will present information on county benefits, which covers assistance with burial expenses.
"We encourage veterans, their spouses, their dependents and widows of veterans to attend the session to gain a general understanding of the benefits they are entitled to receive," Smith said, noting that this is the first time the county has organized such an event.
Following the information session, veterans will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the presenters and ask questions. Resource tables and a continental breakfast will also be provided.
"We want to let people know what our office can provide for the community and learn about the different concerns our veterans have,” Smith said. “It’s going to serve a good purpose."
