FURNITURE DRIVE FOR AVALON COURT FIRE VICTIMS TO BE HELD SATURDAY

WAYNESBURG, PA — A furniture drive for the victims of last week’s Avalon Court apartment building fire in Waynesburg will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at Maintenance Building #8 at the Greene County Fairgrounds.
Items requested include full-size and larger bed frames, dressers, kitchen tables and chairs, microwaves, couches, recliners, nightstands, end tables and lamps. Any item donated should be in good, gently used condition.
New mattresses and box springs will be provided by other sources and are therefore not necessary for Saturday’s furniture drive.
The Greene County Housing Authority is working to find stable housing for the more than 40 residents who were displaced following the April 22 fire. Officials from multiple agencies are assessing the needs of all displaced residents and matching their needs with available resources.
Community Action Southwest will be referring residents to Sears Optical in Waynesburg, which has offered free exams for residents who lost their eyeglasses and prescriptions, and arrangements are also being made to replace lost hearing aids.
The Salvation Army and the Cherry Door, the auxiliary of Southwest Regional Medical Center, are collecting clothing donations for the fire victims.
A fund to assist the victims has been established at Community Bank. Checks may be made payable to “Avalon Court Fire Victims Fund,” or the Greene County Housing Authority. Monetary donations will be accepted at any Community Bank branch or at the authority’s temporary office at the Grandview Drive housing complex in Waynesburg. They may also be mailed to the Housing Authority of the County of Greene, P.O. Box 791, Waynesburg, PA 15370.
