GREENE COUNTY CONTINUES TO PROVIDE EMERGENCY SERVICES

News Release: February 10, 2010
Contact: Elizabeth Witte, Communications Director (724-852-5210)

UPDATE: Please be advised that the warming center at the Carmichaels/Cumberland Township Fire Hall has closed as more residents are able to return home. Remaining occupants are being transferred to the Point Marion American Legion warming center. Anyone in the area needing shelter may go to either the Point Marion American Legion or the Greene County Fairgrounds locations.

WAYNESBURG, PA – As severe winter weather persists in the region, the Greene County Commissioners are praising the county’s emergency responders and others who are working round-the-clock to assist residents dealing with the storms’ aftermath.

"We want to commend and thank the staff at our emergency management and maintenance departments, along with the borough and township employees and all the volunteers who are helping assist residents across the county,” said Commissioner Pam Snyder, chair of the Board of Commissioners.

At Thursday’s regular board meeting, the commissioners are expected to formally sign a declaration of disaster emergency. Officials declared a disaster emergency Saturday, Feb. 6, in Greene County after the first winter storm, which left the county blanketed with more than 20 inches of snow. A statewide disaster emergency was also declared Saturday.

The declaration of disaster emergency allows the county to employ temporary workers, rent equipment, purchase supplies and materials, and enter into contracts and agreements for such work without soliciting bids or proposals.

The county’s emergency management and maintenance staffs worked shifts all weekend, fielding 911 calls from county residents and enabling the lines of communication to stay open in the face of widespread power outages by setting up generators.

Commissioner Dave Coder and county workers opened a warming center at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Waynesburg Saturday morning for residents who lost power. The county has also opened additional warming centers for anyone without heat or power at the following locations:
  • Carmichaels/Cumberland Township Fire Hall, Carmichaels
  • Greensboro/Monongahela Township Fire Hall, Greensboro
  • Mason-Dixon Elementary School, Blacksville, W.Va., in conjunction with Monongalia County Emergency Management
  • Point Marion American Legion Post 499, Point Marion, in conjunction with Fayette County Emergency Management
Anyone planning to stay at a warming center should bring bedding and toiletries. Cots and food will be provided.

On Tuesday, the county opened a pet shelter for domestic pets at the fairgrounds. Members of the County Animal Response Team have made available 30 crates/kennels – 10 each of small, medium and large sizes – and water, but pet owners are advised to bring their own crates or kennels, bedding, and food and water for their pets.
