News Release: February 17, 2010 Contact: Elizabeth Witte, Communications Director (724-852-5210)
WAYNESBURG, PA – Greene County residents interested in running for county Democratic and Republican committee offices may now circulate and file candidates’ nomination petitions. The last day to file nomination petitions with the Greene County Office of Elections and Voter Registration is Tuesday, March 9.
Offices on this year’s general election ballot include the governor, lieutenant governor, U.S. and state senators and representatives, and members of the state Democratic and Republican committees. Locally, candidates may run for positions on the Greene County Democratic and Republican committees. County committee members will be elected during the May 18 primary.
Although March 9 is the last legal day to circulate and file petitions, candidates are encouraged to file earlier to allow time to correct any mistakes made in the process, said Frances Pratt, director of elections. In addition to collecting signatures, candidates must have the affidavits on the back of the petition notarized.
Petitions for county committee offices are available in the elections office, located on the first floor of the Greene County Office Building at 93 East High St. in Waynesburg. The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Completed petitions may be filed in person or mailed to the elections office. All petitions must be received by 4:30 p.m. March 9; postmarked petitions will not be accepted.
Any county resident interested in running for state office should contact the Department of State at 717-787-5280. A packet of petitions and specific instructions will be provided. Petitions for state offices are to be filed in Harrisburg.
As election season officially begins, several vacancies on precinct election boards have been announced. The elections office is seeking qualified individuals to serve as judges of election, majority inspectors and minority inspectors. Anyone interested must be registered to vote in his or her respective precinct. Judges of election and majority inspectors must be registered Democrats, and minority inspectors must be registered Republicans.
Vacancies include judge of elections in Perry Township and Rices Landing Borough; majority inspector in Jefferson 1; and minority inspector in Greensboro Borough, Jefferson 2, Jefferson 3, Jefferson 4, Monongahela 2, Morgan-Mather and Rices Landing Borough.
Judges of election may receive up to $155 for their election day services, including picking up and returning ballots and supplies, and for attending one pre-election class. Majority and minority inspectors may receive anywhere from $130 to $150 for an election and are also required to take one pre-election class.
The municipal primary election will be held Tuesday, May 18, and the general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 2. Ballot positions for the primary election will be determined during the casting of lots starting at noon Wednesday, March 17, in the elections office. Candidates must draw in person or have a designated agent draw for them. If a candidate or designated agent is not present to draw, the Board of Elections will appoint someone to represent that candidate.
April 19 is the deadline to register to vote in the primary, while Oct. 4 is the deadline to register to vote in the general election. County voters who have changed their names or addresses need to notify the elections office of any changes prior to the registration deadlines.
