HUNTING HILLS HAWKEYES TO HOLD REGISTRATIONS FOR SEASON
News Release: February 18, 2010 Contact: Elizabeth Witte, Communications Director (724-852-5210)
WAYNESBURG, PA – The Hunting Hills Hawkeyes, Greene County's Scholastic Clay Target Program team, will hold an open registration for its second season from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 28 at Hunting Hills in Dilliner.
The Greene County Department of Recreation will host the sign-ups for students in fifth through 12th grades who are interested in clay target shooting and have the physical, mental and emotional maturity to participate in a team sport. Category levels will consist of entry, advanced, junior varsity and varsity, and each category comprises rookie, intermediate and senior divisions.
Practice sessions for team members will begin at 1 p.m. March 14 at Hunting Hills and will be held every Sunday through June 13, except on Easter. Registration and consent forms must be completed before a student begins practice. Membership and certain other fees may apply. All students are required to bring a 12- or 20-gauge shotgun, semi-automatic or over-and-under, and shells for each practice session.
Head Coach Chuck Mallory and several volunteer coaches will instruct the students on gun handling, mounting, stance, lead and shot and prepare them for the state competition, scheduled for June 19, at Nemacolin Woodlands Shooting Academy in Farmington.
Last year, 24 members of the Hawkeyes competed in the Pennsylvania Scholastic Clay Target Program Sporting Clays Championship in Bloomsburg with 10 members receiving medals for their performances.
The Hawkeyes formed in February 2009 as part of a pilot Scholastic Clay Target Program in the county. More than 30 students in grades five through 12 participated in the program.
The team's home base of Hunting Hills is owned and operated by Sally and Roy Sisler, who first approached Greene County commissioners in 2008 about starting a Scholastic Clay Target Program. In October, the commissioners presented the Sislers with a citation of congratulations for helping to start the program and for their many contributions, including the use of their facility as a practice location.
Nationally, the programs are sponsored by the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation. Locally, the Greene County commissioners and the Department of Recreation sponsor the program with the mission of promoting the fundamentals of teaching young people about gun safety, team work and outdoor sports.
