WAYNESBURG, PA – From Jan. 12 to Feb. 16, the Greene County Department of Recreation will again offer classes in the fitness program Zumba. Classes will be held Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. with instructor Marianne Kolson on the upper level of the 4-H Building at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Waynesburg.
Individual classes will be offered at a cost of $8 per class. Anyone wishing to attend all six classes, however, can save $18 by pre-registering at the discounted cost of $30. The early registration deadline is Friday, Jan. 8.
The Department of Recreation first launched Zumba classes last year, and the sessions proved to be a hit with area residents. Class attendees should wear sweat-absorbing clothes and good support shoes, such as cross-training or dance shoes, as well as bring water and towels.
According to its Web site, the fitness program Zumba eliminates the “work” from “working out” by combining Latin and international music with dynamic, yet simple exercise moves. While Zumba embraces all the fundamental principles of fitness, the secret behind the program is how it motivates the body to efficiently burn calories, effectively tone all muscle groups, incorporate a full range of motion and improve the cardiovascular system. Fun and music are the two special motivational ingredients.
Utilizing the natural beat, tempo and music transitions, the Zumba dances seamlessly flow from one toning, strengthening or cardio move into the next, according to the Zumba Web site. Participants are constantly engaged and entertained with the variety of rhythms, including salsa, merengue, samba, belly dancing, cumbia, flamenco, reggaeton and more. Zumba is recognized by leading fitness organizations, including the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, the American Council on Exercise and Can-Fit-Pro, a Canadian fitness education organization.
