WAYNESBURG, PA – After a beginner’s fly-tying course held in March proved to be a success, the Greene County Department of Recreation plans to offer additional courses starting in December.
From March 9 to 25, instructor Ken Dufalla led a six-session beginner’s course in fly tying at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Waynesburg. Fourteen Greene County residents participated in the course and learned the basic principles needed to begin fly tying, such as threading a hook, adding the basic body parts of a fly, adding the hackle and tying off the fly. Each student had the opportunity to make several flies during the course, including streamers.
The course was the first in a series that will lead to students learning more advanced fly tying skills and making the most complicated flies and lures such as dry flies and nymphs.
Starting in December, the Department of Recreation plans to offer the series of four courses: another beginner’s course; an intermediate-level course; a course focusing on lure making and fly tying; and an advanced course consisting of making dry and wet flies and copies of insects found in streams. The courses are expected to run through March 2011.
The March fly-tying course was sponsored by the Greene County Commissioners, the Department of Recreation, the Harry Enstrom Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America and Mark IV, which donated a storage cabinet used for course supplies.
