WAYNESBURG, PA Nearly 100 runners and walkers turned out for the annual Dock to Lock 5K Run/Walk & 10K Run, held Saturday, May 8, along the Greene River Trail.
The race, which included 84 participants, began at 9 a.m. at the trail midway point at Crucible Ferry in Rices Landing. The race had to be rerouted this year due to a low-hanging tree on another part of the trail.
An awards ceremony at the Rices Landing Fire Hall followed the race. Prizes were given for the top three male and female runners and walkers overall, as well as the top three male and female runners and walkers in various age categories.
The top three overall winners in the 5K run were:
Male: First place, Alec Statler, 16, of Core, W.Va. (pictured), 19:37.9; second place, Rich Sandala, 48, of Venetia, 20:58.3; and third place, Kevin Hendricks, 32, of Oakdale, 21:23.0.
Female: First place, Michelle Naymick, 19, of Uniontown, 22:21.2; second place, Mikayla Sonneborn, 16, of West Finley, 25:08.3; and third place, Danielle Lucas, 24, of Burgettstown, 25:39.1.
The top three overall winners in the 5K walk were:
Male: First place, Jack Pawlik, 60, of McMurray, 37:01.3; second place, John Hart, 62, of Millsboro, 45:24.1; and third place, John Enci, 78, of Carmichaels, 47:24.9.
Female: First place, Leanne Kurpiel, 41, of Connellsville, 37:42.2; second place, Kristy Santoyo, 36, of Rices Landing, 39:40.6; and third place, Linda Keller, 57, of Waynesburg, 41:39.9.
The top three overall winners in the 10K run were:
Male: First place, Doug Basinski, 39, of Pittsburgh, 39:51.4; second place, Heath Piper, 28, of Washington, 42:01.7; and third place, Michael Frere, 29, of Monongahela, 43:24.2.
Female: First place, Allison Keller, 28, of Point Marion, 52:25.1; second place, Dena Fox, 42, of Carmichaels, 56:12.7; and third place, Cara Host, 32, of Carmichaels, 58:11.5.
The age categories awarded for runners were: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-69 and 70-plus. For walkers, the age categories awarded were: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-plus. A random drawing for prizes, including a DVD player, CD player, clock radios and a portable CD player, was also held following the race.
Dock to Lock runners and walkers were timed by Miles of Smiles Timing Service of Ellwood City, Pa. Race results may be viewed online at www.smileymiles.com.
All proceeds from Dock to Lock benefit the Department of Recreation’s summer Day Camp program, which offers free activities for county children. Sponsors of this year’s race were the Greene County Commissioners, the Greene County Department of Recreation, Admiral Well Service/Platinum Pressure Services, Inc., Baily Insurance, Direct Results, First Federal Savings and Loan of Greene County, First Student, Greene Cove Yacht Club, Rices Landing Volunteer Fire Company, Wal-Mart, WANB Radio, Washington County Road Runners Club and Waynesburg University.
The next race scheduled for the Greene River Trail is the Heroes Run/Walk on Saturday, Sept. 18. The race will feature a 5K run and walk and a 15K run and benefits scholarship funds established in honor of Army Spc. Gregory Cox and Marine Lance Cpl.
