News Release: May 12, 2010 Contact: Elizabeth Witte, Communications Director (724-852-5210)
WAYNESBURG, PA Greene County residents voting in the May 18 primary election will be asked twice to choose a candidate to replace the late U.S. Rep. John Murtha in Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District.
A special election will be held during the primary to elect a candidate to fulfill Murtha’s unexpired term, which ends Dec. 31, 2010. The 12th District includes all of Greene County and parts of eight other counties.
All registered voters in the 12th District may vote in this special election, which will be the first item on the ballot for registered Democrats and Republicans and the only item on the ballot for nonpartisan voters. Three candidates will appear on the special election ballot: Democrat Mark S. Critz, Republican Tim Burns and Libertarian Demo Agoris. The winner of the special election will be sworn in and serve only the remainder of Murtha’s term.
In addition to the special election, Critz and Burns also appear among the candidates seeking their party’s nomination to represent the 12th District for a full 2-year term that begins in January 2011. The candidates, in ballot order, are Democrats Critz, Ryan Bucchianeri and Ronald Mackell, Jr., and Republicans William Russell and Burns.
Following the primary, one candidate from each party will advance to the Nov. 2 general election, and one will be elected to serve the 2-year term. Only registered Democrats and Republicans may vote in this race and all of the other primary races.
Other offices on Tuesday’s primary ballot include the governor, lieutenant governor, U.S. senator for Pennsylvania, state senator for the 46th District, state representative for the 50th District, members of the state Democratic and Republican committees and members of the county Democratic and Republican committees.
In other primary news, the county elections office has announced that a polling place change will be in effect Tuesday. The Jefferson #4 precinct polling place has changed from Mezan’s Garage on Pine Street to Hirosky’s Garage, also on Pine Street.
All 44 precinct polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the municipal primary election. The deadline for absentee ballots to be returned to the elections office is 5 p.m. Friday, May 14.
Frances Pratt, director of elections, would also like to remind voters that a sample ES&S iVotronic voting machine will remain on display in the elections office through Tuesday for anyone wishing to practice using the machine. Voters will see the ballot as it will appear Tuesday and can run through the steps to casting their votes on the touch-screen machine.
Pratt would also like to encourage voters interested in working on a precinct’s board of elections to sign up on the appropriate sheet when they arrive to vote Tuesday.
