PARADES, PROGRAMS TO MARK MEMORIAL DAY

WAYNESBURG, PA — Parades and programs honoring Greene County’s veterans will highlight the services commemorating the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 31. All events are free and open to the public.

On Sunday, May 30, three programs will be held. The Carmichaels Honor Guard, consisting of members of Carmichaels American Legion Post 400, Carmichaels VFW Post 3491, Greensboro VFW Post 6303 and Bobtown VFW Post 5567, will participate in services at:
  • 10 a.m., Glades Church
  • 10:30 a.m., Muddy Creek Cemetery
  • 11:15 a.m., Garards Fort Cemetery
  • 12:15 p.m., Bobtown Honor Roll
  • 12:45 p.m., Greensboro VFW
  • 2:15 p.m., Monongahela Hill Cemetery, with speaker Tony Brnusak, president of United Mine Workers Local 2300 at Cumberland Mine.
The James R. Maxon American Legion Post 992 of Mt. Morris will host services at:
  • 11 a.m., Kiger Cemetery, with Honor Guard/Firing Squad
  • Noon, Claughton Chapel Cemetery, with Honor Guard/Firing Squad
Beginning at 2 p.m., the Brooks-Crago American Legion Post 816 of Rices Landing will participate in services. A parade will begin at the post home and proceed to the Honor Roll located between Hewitt Cemetery and Hewitt Presbyterian Church. Herb Hermann, commander of the American Legion 25th District, will serve as speaker for the ceremonies.

On Monday, May 31, four programs will be held. The Carmichaels Honor Guard, consisting of members of Carmichaels American Legion Post 400, Carmichaels VFW Post 3491, Greensboro VFW Post 6303 and Bobtown VFW Post 5567, will participate in services at:
  • 10 a.m., Nemacolin Honor Roll
  • 11 a.m., Crucible Monument Honor Roll
  • 11:45 a.m., Parade from Yoskovich Funeral Home to Laurel Point Cemetery.
  • Noon, Laurel Point Cemetery, with Greene County Judge Farley Toothman as speaker, followed by a luncheon provided by the Carmichaels American Legion.
The James R. Maxon American Legion Post 992 of Mt. Morris will host services at:
  • 10:15 a.m., Mt. Morris United Methodist Church
  • 11 a.m., Parade from Mt. Morris United Methodist Church to the Honor Roll, with a salute to the deceased and the placement of a wreath.
  • Noon, Cedar Grove Cemetery, with retired U.S. Army Sgt. Pat St. Clair as speaker.
The Filer-Sadlek American Legion Post 954 of Jefferson will host services at:
  • 10:30 a.m., Mather Post Office, with speaker Rev. Dom Sgro.
  • 11 a.m., Honor Roll Memorial Service, with a salute to the deceased and the placement of a wreath.
  • 11:30 a.m., Veterans’ section of Greene County Memorial Park, with a salute to the deceased and the placement of a wreath at the base of the American flag.
The Waynesburg American Legion Post 330, Waynesburg VFW Post 4793 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 123 will host a service at 11 a.m. at the VFW post home with a speaker to be announced.

All Greene County offices will be closed Monday, May 31, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. For more information on Memorial Day activities, call the Veterans Affairs office at 724-852-5275.
