GREENE COUNTY POOLS TO CELEBRATE ONE LAST SWIM OF THE SUMMER
News Release: September 1, 2010 Contact: Elizabeth Menhart, Communications Director/Tourism (724-852-5210)
WAYNESBURG, PA As the summer season winds down, two of Greene County’s three public pools will mark the occasion with last swims during Labor Day weekend.
Foundation Coal Family Aquatic Center in Waynesburg will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, and from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, and Labor Day Monday, Sept. 6, before officially closing for the season. Hours are subject to change in the event of inclement weather.
Next year, the aquatic center will open under a new name, Alpha Aquatics, to reflect last year’s merger of Foundation Coal and Alpha Natural Resources.
Admission prices at the aquatic center are $5 for children age 17 and younger and senior citizens age 62 and older, and $7 for adults ages 18 to 61. Active-duty military personnel and their immediate families may swim for free under a resolution passed by the Greene County Commissioners. Military members must bring their military identification cards to be admitted.
Mon View Pool in Greensboro will also celebrate a last swim during Labor Day weekend: On Sunday, Sept. 5, the pool will host the annual Dog Gone Pool Party for dogs and their owners. The party starts at 6 p.m., and owners are asked to make a donation as admission. All proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Greene County.
Aside from the Dog Gone Pool Party, Mon View Pool will not be open for swimming during Labor Day weekend. Carmichaels Pool in Carmichaels has also already closed for swimming due to a lack of lifeguards and other staff. Season memberships purchased this year for either Mon View or Carmichaels pools will be honored at the aquatic center during Labor Day weekend.
"When students go back to high school and college, we lose most of our lifeguards and pool staff," said Commissioner Pam Snyder, chair of the Board of Commissioners. "Therefore, we usually end up closing the pools during the last week of August before officially closing for the summer on Labor Day."
This summer, the Greene County Department of Recreation offered swimming lessons at all three pools. Approximately 350 people took the classes, which ranged from elementary lessons for babies and children to advanced techniques for more experienced swimmers.
Dozens of private pool parties were also held at two of the pools this summer, and two splash parties took place at Carmichaels Pool in July.
Anyone interested in becoming a lifeguard for the 2011 season should contact the Department of Recreation at 724-852-5323. For more information on the Dog Gone Pool Party, call 724-627-9988 or click here.
