WAYNESBURG, PA The Greene County Board of Elections will next week officially certify the results of the May primary election. The results were first signed Friday, May 27; barring any requests for a recount or recanvass, the county elections board will certify the returns at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 8.
The statewide recount and recanvass is mandated whenever one candidate defeats another by one-half of a percent or less of the votes cast for the nomination, according to the Pennsylvania Department of State. The two candidates were Kathryn Boockvar, who unofficially won with 50.2 percent of the vote, and Barbara Behrend Ernsberger, who received 49.8 percent of the vote. In Greene County, Ernsberger received 76.9 percent of the vote, and Boockvar received 23.1 percent.
The Greene County elections board is required to manually tabulate and report the recount numbers and notify the candidates if they wish to be present during the recount.
