DOCK TO LOCK RACE DRAWS 104 RUNNERS, WALKERS

RICES LANDING, PA — More than 100 runners and walkers turned out for the annual Dock to Lock 5K Run/Walk & 10K Run, held Saturday, May 7, along the Greene River Trail.

The race, which included 104 participants, began at 9 a.m. at the trail starting point at the Greene Cove Yacht Club in Jefferson Township. An awards ceremony at the Rices Landing Fire Hall followed the race. Prizes were given for the top three male and female runners and walkers overall, as well as the top three male and female runners and walkers in various age categories.

The top three overall winners in the 5K run were:
  • Male: First place, John Ross, 29, of Scenery Hill, 19:01.6; second place, Walter Bennett, 45, of Belle Vernon, 19:25.7; and third place, Rich Sandala, 49, of Venetia, 20:21.8.
  • Female: First place, Michelle Naymick, 20, of Uniontown, 20:27.1; second place, Julia McCracken, 23, of Waynesburg, 25:21.7; and third place, Lori Kubincanek, 45, of Fredericktown, 25:33.9.
The top three overall winners in the 5K walk were:
  • Male: First place, John Childs, 33, of Carmichaels, 29:41.6; second place, Jack Pawlik, 61, of McMurray, 35:57.9; and third place, Bill Descutner, 66, of Greensboro, 41:01.2.
  • Female: First place, Linda Keller, 58, of Waynesburg, 38:35.1; second place, Makensie Holets, 18, of Monongahela, 38:56.0; and third place, Donna Russo, 59, of Waynesburg, 39:28.1.
The top three overall winners in the 10K run were:
  • Male: First place, Joseph Phillips, 39, of Morgantown, W.Va., 44:02.2; second place, Jonathan Johnson, 37, of Waynesburg, 45:28.5; and third place, Gary Chabala, 58, of Bridgeville, 47:15.9.
  • Female: First place, Leanne Kurpiel, 42, of Connellsville, 51:28.1; second place, Lauren Beiter, 31, of Waynesburg, 56:47.1; and third place, Deborah Pester, 32, of Sycamore, 57:28.3.
The age categories awarded for runners were: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-69 and 70-plus. For walkers, the age categories awarded were: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-plus. A random drawing for prizes was also held following the race.

Dock to Lock runners and walkers were timed by Miles of Smiles Timing Service of Ellwood City, Pa. Race results may be viewed online at www.smileymiles.com.

Proceeds from Dock to Lock benefit Department of Recreation programs, such as the summer Day Camp program, which offers free activities for county children ages 5 to 15. This year, Day Camp will be held June 20 through July 29 at various locations across the county.

Sponsors of this year’s race included the Greene County Commissioners, Baily Insurance, Blue Mountain Equipment Rental, Buddy’s Inc., Chuck’s Collision, Community Bank, First Federal Savings and Loan of Greene County, First Student, Horizon Wealth Management, Rices Landing Volunteer Fire Department, T-Tygart Industries, Washington Greene County Job Training Agency Inc., Wal-Mart and Waynesburg University.

The next race scheduled for the Greene River Trail is the Heroes Run/Walk on Saturday, Sept. 17. The race will feature a 5K run and walk and a 15K run and benefits memorial funds established in honor of Army Spc. Gregory Cox and Marine Lance Cpl.
