RECREATION HOSTING SECOND ROUND OF CLASSES AT FAIRGROUNDS
For Release: Feb. 28, 2012
Contact: Elizabeth Menhart, Communications Director/Tourism (724-852-5210)

WAYNESBURG, PA — After hosting several well-attended educational programs last fall, the Greene County Department of Recreation will again offer classes in cake decorating and jewelry making. Both classes will be held in March in the 4-H Building at the Greene County Fairgrounds and are sponsored by the Greene County Commissioners and Department of Recreation.

On Tuesday, March 6, Yvonne Lee of Carmichaels will lead a spring cake decorating class. “Spring Cake Decorating by Von Lee” will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the lower level of the 4-H Building. The cost to attend is $25, and the pre-registration deadline is Monday, March 5.

Participants in the hands-on class will learn basic decorating techniques, such as easy frosting skills, more advanced piping and fondant design, and will leave the class with their own decorated 8-inch round cake. Supplies will be provided, although bringing an apron is optional.

Creating jewelry out of everyday items will be the focus of “Trash to Treasure” from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, and Tuesday, March 27, on the upper level of the 4-H Building. Debbie Kembro of Mather will lead the classes, which cost $20 per person per class. Class size is limited, and the pre-registration deadline is Monday, March 19.

This spring’s classes are geared more toward stay-at-home moms, with a class time during the day while kids are in school. The classes will focus on making jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets and rings from ordinary household items or even broken jewelry. Anyone with jewelry-making tools may bring them, but prior experience is not necessary. Every participant who brings simple, small items will leave the class with a unique piece of jewelry.

The Department of Recreation is also currently offering six weeks of Zumba fitness classes on Thursdays from March 1 through April 5. Classes will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. in the 4-H Building.

Individual classes will be offered at a cost of $8 per class. Anyone wishing to attend all six classes, however, can pre-register at a discounted rate of $5 per class, for a total of $30. The early registration deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 29.

Instructor Shastina Maraney will lead the classes. Attendees should wear sweat-absorbing clothes and good support shoes, such as cross-training or dance shoes, and bring water and towels.

For more information, or to pre-register for any of the classes, call the Department of Recreation at 724-852-5323, or visit www.co.greene.pa.us.
