COMMISSIONERS RECEIVE STATE FUNDING FOR AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT For Release: Jan. 6, 2012 Contact: Elizabeth Menhart, Communications Director/Tourism (724-852-5210)
WAYNESBURG, PA The Greene County Commissioners today received $250,000 in state Redevelopment Assistance Capital Project funding for improvements to the Greene County Airport.
The funding, presented by state Sen. Tim Solobay, will be used to offset the construction costs of a new access road and gateway to the airport, which comprises 150 acres along Route 21 in Franklin Township. The commissioners have worked for several years toward redeveloping the airport property into a business park to stimulate economic development and maximize the property’s usage.
"Today’s presentation of state funds brings us one step closer to achieving our development plans at the airport," said Commissioner Pam Snyder, chair of the Board of Commissioners. "We are committed to strengthening the airport as a county asset and greatly anticipate the retail and business opportunities this redevelopment will create."
The relocated access road and entrance will create more efficient traffic movement and open up additional land at the airport for further development. The total estimated cost of the project is $1 million. The county has secured a combination of state and federal funds as well as county bond proceeds for the first phase of the redevelopment.
The RACP grant program is administered by the state Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic and historical improvement projects, according to the budget office’s Web site.
