Commissioners proclaim May as "Children and Youth Services Appreciation Month"

FOR RELEASE — May 17, 2017

WAYNESBURG, PA — The Greene County Commissioners today proclaimed May as “Children and Youth Services Appreciation Month” to underscore the commitment that Greene County’s Children and Youth Services (CYS) agency has to children and to keeping them safe.

Changes in recent years to the Child Protectives Services Law have significantly expanded the state's definition of child abuse, including clarification of who is to be considered a mandatory reporter as well as who can be defined as an alleged perpetrator of such abuse. Consequently, CYS agencies across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, already overwhelmed with high staff turnover, have experienced an increase in their workloads. State audits of CYS agencies have raised concerns about the burden and demands placed on caseworkers as a result of these greater caseloads added to other stressors already inherent in the nature of child welfare.

"The Greene County Commissioners are actively involved in our own internal assessment and are stepping up recruitment efforts and agency improvements," said Commissioner Blair Zimmerman. “These are hard jobs, but they are vitally important jobs providing opportunities, challenges and competitive salaries for qualified professionals who want to make a positive difference in the lives of children.”

Commissioners Archie Trader and Dave Coder join Zimmerman in recognizing the child welfare staff – administrative, fiscal, social services, casework and management.

"We are grateful for the work they do, behind the scenes, day after day after day, to make the world a better place for our children and families," said Zimmerman.

Currently, the agency has vacant caseworker and supervisory positions. Anyone interested in learning more about applying can visit the county website at or by calling the Human Resources office at 724-852-5200.

Accepting the proclamation from Commissioners Blair Zimmerman and Dave Coder are the employees of the Greene County Children and Youth Services.
