Greene County Commissioners issued a proclamation during a recent meeting recognizing Nov. 11, 2019 as Veterans Day.
The proclamation was presented to representatives of the Greene County Veterans Affairs Office during the Commissioners’ regular meeting on Nov. 14. Numerous military veterans were also in attendance.
The proclamation states that on Veterans Day, “it is our duty to honor the memory of our dedicated servicemen and women who never returned home having made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our nation and its way of life.”
It has been custom to commemorate November 11 – the anniversary of the ending of World War I – by “paying tribute to the heroes of that tragic struggle and by redirecting ourselves to the cause of peace,” the proclamation states.
In attendance at the meeting to accept the proclamation were Kathy Cipcic and Renee Imhoff, director and administrative assistant, respectively, of the county Veterans Affairs Office.
Joining them were numerous veterans, including: Mike Belding, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps; Rick Black of Waynesburg VFW Post 4793; Michele Deems, 25th District Commander of the American Legion; Terry Hoyle, President of the Greene County Veterans Council; James Lang, Waynesburg VFW Post 4793 Trustee; Frank Smith of VFW Waynesburg Post 4793 and Purple Heart recipient; James Townsend of Carmichaels American Legion Post 400 and Purple Heart recipient; and Arthur White, Waynesburg VFW Post 4793 Trustee.
Also recognized at the meeting were Scott Kelly, Chief Financial Officer for the County of Greene and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps; Commissioner Dave Coder, a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard; and John “Buzz” Walters, West Greene American Legion Commander and a USMC veteran.
Commissioner Blair Zimmerman said that with the proclamation, “we (the Commissioners) join the rest of the nation in recognizing the courageous efforts of our veterans and proclaiming November 11, 2019, as Veterans Day, as we honor and commend our American heroes past and present.”
Commissioner Dave Coder added, “Greene County residents should be very proud of the many local veterans who served our country, and never forget those who paid the ultimate price.”
And Commissioner Archie Trader acknowledged the veterans “who have fought with fortitude to defend our great nation and its way of life.”
Cipcic thanked the Commissioners for the proclamation, and also expressed her gratitude to “the many area service men and women who dedicated their lives – and in many cases, sacrificed their lives – to protect and honor our country.”
