Flag Day celebrated in Greene County

The Greene County Honor Guard stands at attention during a Flag Day ceremony held on June 14 at the county courthouse as Greene County Commissioner Blair Zimmerman talks about the significance of the American flag.
WAYNESBURG, PA. – The history and significance of the American flag was celebrated during a special ceremony early this morning, when the Fort Jackson Sons of the American Revolution held its 30th annual Flag Day service in front of the county courthouse.

Flag Day is celebrated each year on June 14, commemorating the adoption of the American flag by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1977.

The SAR Flag Day service featured the official raising of the flag by SAR members, followed by an invocation by SAR Chaplain James Hixon, the National Anthem sung by Paige Armstrong, the Pledge of Allegiance led by Buzz Walters, an invocation, Military Rites by the Greene County Honor Guard and comments by Greene County Commissioner Blair Zimmerman.

Zimmerman, who was in attendance with Greene County Commissioner Dave Coder, talked about the American flag and what it means to our nation, stating that “symbolically, we are all microscopic pieces of the flag’s cloth … and when our red, white and blue flags are proudly displayed and are flying high on poles across the country each and every day, they are strong symbols and they represent each and every person who is proud to be an American.”

At the conclusion of the ceremony, SAR Chaplain James Hixon delivered the benediction, where he encouraged everyone to “always remember and honor the men and women who paid the ultimate price for the American flag … our flag may be worn and tattered, but it still proudly stands.”
