The Day Camp program runs for six weeks every summer, providing hundreds of Greene County children with fun and activities. Running from mid-June until the end of July, the Day Camp program is free for all county children ages five to 15 years old. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, campers enjoy activities at eight parks, pools, community centers and elementary schools across the county.
The Day Camp locations include Bobtown Elementary, Jefferson Township Park, Lions Club Park, Mon View Park, Nineveh Community Center, Perry Elementary, Ryerson Station State Park and Wana B Park.
Campers at Bobtown Elementary will be bussed to Mon View Park daily, and campers at Perry Elementary will be bussed to Lions Club Park daily. Campers at Jefferson Township Park will be bussed to Eastern Pool at Wana B Park each afternoon.
Day Camps were originally offered in 1970 at three sites, but were ended in 1975. In 1991, the Department began offering the Summer Day Camps again, which has become an extremely successful program throughout the County. Since its re-offering, the Summer Day Camp program has been expanded from one site in 1991 to three sites in 1992 and is currently offered at the following sites mentioned above.
Learn to Swim Program:
In addition to the Summer Day Camps, the Department of Recreation also offers a Learn to Swim program. The program is held at both the Carmichaels and Waynesburg pools. Fees run at $20 per person and $10 per person for beginners. Approximately 500 participants take part in the program annually. Figure 2-1: Recreation Program Locations identifies the locations of the Learn to Swim program.
Camp Challenge:
The Washington-Greene County Job Training Agency, Inc., administers Camp Challenge with funding provided by the Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation. Camp Challenge is for children ages 9 to 11 years old. The mission of Camp Challenge is to educate the youth of Greene County about positive lifestyles and career choices.
During the one-hour sessions, lessons will be taught in a fun, interactive approach and environment, including competitive games, relays, ongoing activities, and daily rewards and prizes. Upon completion of the camp, participants will be invited to attend a field trip which will include a luncheon at the Cheesecake Factory and a guided tour of Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
