Greene County Airport

Greene County Airport - KWAY

About our County Airport:  KWAY

The Airport Administration building houses the non-towered control center for the airport, the Airport Restaurant (open from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily), and the office of the Magisterial District Judge for Central Greene County.  The physical location of the airport is 417 East Roy Furman Highway, Waynesburg, PA  15370.

Greene County Airport can accept light aircraft. International air terminals and air-freight services are available at Pittsburgh International Airport, just one hour north of Waynesburg.

For busy company executives who want to maximize their time and build efficiency in their travel schedule, the Greene County Airport provides an ideal tool and another competitive advantage for the nearby EverGreene Technology Park.

The airport is a public-use, general aviation airport with no runway lights for night landing. It currently has hangar space for small aircraft. The 3,500-foot-by-75-foot bit runway can sufficiently accommodate most light aviation needs. With the ultimate goal of transforming the airport into an executive airpark, EverGreene planners and business developers are actively seeking aviation-related businesses and flight training academies interested in building long-term partnerships. The aviation sector will greatly benefit from the park's other workforce development initiatives already in the planning stages with all five Greene County school districts, the vocational-technical school and higher education partners like Waynesburg University. From leading-edge aviation training and maintenance curricula to internship and apprenticeship programs, the unprecedented cooperation among these public and private entities is unique and powerful.

The airport was activited in December 1937. In the years following 1946, there were numerous improvements made. In 1958, the main runway (3,500 feet long and 75 feet wide) was paved. During 1972-73, taxiways were constructed and the apron expanded at a cost of about $324,600. A master plan was completed in 1974, and in 1977 the turf runway was abondoned. An access taxiway was built to the T-hangers in 1979-80; and in 1983, a bituminous overlay was applied to the runway, and additional taxiways were built to a new T-hanger.

In 2011, the local National Guard Unit (now based at the EverGreene Industrial Park, located behind the airport runways) occassionally conducts air mobility training at the airport. The guardsmen practice quickly boarding and deboarding military helicopters to simulate what they may have to do on the battlefield. For safety reasons, the execise is closed to the public, although spectators often observe the maneuvers from the airport parking lot; but are asked not to approach the helicopters or the soldiers on the airfield.
