Greene River Trail

The Greene River Trail is a rail trail that runs adjacent to the Upper Monongahela Water Trail greenway providing a tranquil view of the river for its users.

The trail was designed to accommodate those individuals interested in walking, jogging, and bicycling. A twelve-foot right-of-way with fencing along most of the periphery provide a variety of trail users and adjacent property owners with a sense of safety and security.  The trail has smooth crushed gravel surface that is very well maintained by the recreation department.

The beautiful Greene River Trail parallels the Monongahela River as it winds through the coal mining region of Greene County. The 7.24 mile trail starts in Millsboro at the Greene Cove Yacht Club trailhead in Jefferson Township. From there, the trail runs south along the river through a stretch of peaceful, scenic woodlands. Please Note: The Greene Cove Trailhead portion of the Trail is closed.

No motor vehicles are permitted. This is a nature trail and warns of steep slopes potential for falling or sliding materials and exposure to poisonous plants and animals native to the region.

Northern Greene River Trailhead closes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WAYNESBURG – Regrettably, the Greene County Commissioners announce the closure of an easement giving access to the north end of the Greene River Trail. The property owner has demanded untenable changes in the easement agreement including indemnity clauses and insurance coverage unattainable at a reasonable rate for the county. Therefore, access to the Greene River Trailhead adjacent Greene Cove Marina will no longer be available.

Unable to reach a risk management agreement with the easement owner, the Greene County Commissioners have been forced to make the tough decision to close the northern access point to the trail located near the Greene Cove Marina at 1590 N 88 Road, Clarksville, PA 15322.

The easement owner is demanding coverage of $5 million per incident, as well as, an indemnity clause that would hold the county broadly liable for incidents on the easement to include intentional negligence. Two attorneys employed by the county with more than 80 years of municipal law experience between them and the underwriters for the insurance company found the demands unreasonable.

Greene County Commissioner Mike Belding said, “It is unfortunate we couldn’t maintain this easement at a reasonable risk to the taxpayers of Greene County, but one of government’s primary responsibilities is to protect the public from undo risk. The proposed changes to the easement agreement present risks that are not acceptable. Our subject matter experts in municipal law and the insurance industry have significant concerns about the liability that would be presented to the taxpayer should this proposed agreement be accepted.”

The Trail will continue to be available through the Rices Landing Trailhead and the Jessop Boat Club Trailhead. The Rices Landing Trailhead is at the trail parking lot located near Rices Landing United Methodist Church at 125 Main Street, Rices Landing PA  15357. The Southern Trailhead is a designated parking lot located near Jessop Boat Club at 201 River Lane Carmichaels, PA 15320.

Additional information can be obtained on the Greene County Commissioner’s Facebook page or by calling (724) 852-5210.
